Last night, I had the pleasure of bringing Buffalo DJ Steve Kream out for a RIPROC sockhop. We had some trouble getting the jam band off-stage on time, but the night was otherwise swell. A couple hundred people through the door and some great music always does well. Now I’m back in Boston for a week (Spring Break and all of that), but some exciting spring shows coming up. Stay tuned for more details.

This morning, Google deleted all my mail. This evening, they decided to fix it by disabling the rest of my account. This wasn’t a hack, it happened to 100′s of other people, and it’s a tiny bit inconvenient. Not like I’m applying for jobs or anything.

If you’ve tried to email me and received a “Could Not Deliver” notification, you can reach me at …. I apologize for the inconvenience, hopefully this will get resolved in the next day or so.

Resolved. Thank heavens.

Just got back from a great show opening for Telephoned and LMFAO. Meant to post about this earlier, but just wound up a little too busy. If you haven’t checked out Telephoned yet, please do – they’re from NYC and signed to Fool’s Gold Records. Like them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter, but definitely check out their stuff (Hold Me is a definite standout).

For those of you who come to our Dub Land shows, you might recognize the producer of Telephoned as none other than Sammy Bananas. Telephoned played last September, but we had Sammy out just last Thursday and he brought the house down.

And for looks, here are a few of the choice photos from the last few Dub Land sockhops:

A couple really good tracks this week. Most notably a new Donnis track and a “leak” from Chiddy Bang/Xaphoon Jones. Enjoy!

Donnis – Blackberry Molasses [mp3]

I’m incredibly proud to announce the second installment of my mix series Driving North. For those of you who are new to this series, the idea is pretty simple: I take the last song of my last mix, and use it as the first song in my new mix. It’s a pretty simple constraint, but it helps give direction and makes for an easy gimmick. If you haven’t heard it already, take a listen to my first installment of Driving North. As always, please feel free to tweet/post/blog about this mix. You can find me on Twitter or Facebook.

About Part 2: This is a dark and moody collection of house, garage, and dubstep. Though I have a really hard time with “brostep” (dubstep that sounds like a chainsaw), there are elements of the genre that are really just incredible. The moodier part of dubstep tends to have heavy R&B influences, something I’ve always appreciated. If you’re looking for more of this sound, I highly recommend you check out extrawater radio by my friend Joe Lzrz.

This is a pretty good mix of new and old, all tied together by more or less one constant: I’ve never been able to play them out. That’s not entirely true, I’m sure I’ve managed to squeeze a couple of these into a set somewhere, but these aren’t typical going-out songs so it’s been nice to finally give them a home.

Download: Ezra Mechaber – Driving North, Part Two (save target as)

Tracklist:

  1. School of Seven Bells – Half Asleep (Lusine remix)
  2. Florence & The Machine – You Got The Love (XX remix)
  3. Paul Kalkbrenner – Sky & Sand
  4. CWB feat. Tash Baxter – Into The Twilight
  5. Katy B feat. Ms. Dynamite – Lights On
  6. French Fries & Chaos In The CBD – With You
  7. Joy Orbison – The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow
  8. The Count & Sinden – You Make Me Feel So Good
  9. Joy Orbison – J. Doe
  10. Addison Grove – Footcrab
  11. Disclosure – Linstigator
  12. Throwing Snow – Un Vingt
  13. XI – Light
  14. Gold Panda – Snow & Taxis (Throwing Snow remix)
  15. Skream feat. Freckles – Give You Everything
  16. Todd Edwards – I Might Be (MJ Cole remix)
  17. Maddslinky – Special (MJ Cole’s “Back To The Future” remix)
  18. Broken Social Scene – All To All (Skeet Skeet remix)
  19. Drake – Fireworks (Deadboy Slo Mo House Edit)

Production note: this was recorded in 3 pieces and then cleaned up a little (2 volume edits, tweaking a loop, and smoothing out a recording glitch). The original sounds good, but this is a little shinier.

Colin Munroe is a pretty talented guy – he’s toured with Wale, sung hooks for Donnis, been featured with Drake, and worked with plenty others. He’s known for using a pretty unique vocal pitching technique, something I hadn’t heard much of in other tracks until Skrillex’s latest release. As far as I know he’s using Melodyne and editing formants. I’ve seen him live, and he’s a lot of fun – plays the drums and keys at the same time as he sings, which is no small feat.

But anyway, back to the point. “The Only Exception” is a revox (like a remix, but not – you’ll see what I mean) by Colin Munroe and it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve heard all week. He takes a Paramore track, strips it of nearly everything but the vocal, and sings around it. Vaguely haunting and totally awesome.

“I say yes, I say why not. You say no, you’re so cold.”

This song is one of those late-night-commute songs. Riding a bus? Taking the subway? Driving through the city with the night sky overhead? File this alongside “Moving To New York” by The Wombats and John Mayer’s “Why Georgia.”

I’m so proud to finally release my next mixtape, entitled “Driving North: Part I.” It’s a selection of some of my favorite disco records of (mostly) 2010 and moves in a darker direction towards the end.

Why the darker direction? Because it’s winter. Also, because this is going to be a mix series and part 2 will be a darker selection of juke/dub/stuff. So that’s why. And yeah, I’m well aware the middle of this mix is practically a Treasure Fingers’ Greatest Hits mix. Oops. Check the tracklist below, and twitter or facebook me if you’re feeling it! Oh, and check out my past mixtapes.

Download: Ezra Mechaber – Driving North Part I (save target as)

Tracklist:

  1. Miami Horror – Holidays
  2. Flight Facilities feat. Giselle – Crave You (Cassian Remix)
  3. Michael Gray – Borderline
  4. U-Tern – 808 Remix
  5. Marina & The Diamonds – Shampain (Fred Falke Remix)
  6. Sky Ferreira – Stand Back (Stevie Nicks Cover)
  7. Aniki – Lesbian Bondage Fiasco (Nightriders Remix)
  8. Treasure Fingers – Lift Me
  9. Rogerseventytwo – Take Me Higher
  10. Burns & Fred Falke – You Stopped Loving Me (Treasure Fingers Remix)
  11. Pharrell/Uffie – ADD SUV (Armand Van Helden Remix)
  12. Treasure Fingers – What Am I Supposed To Do?
  13. Senor Stereo – Hot Damn!
  14. Senor Stereo – Hot Damn! (Gigamesh Remix)
  15. Tensnake – Coma Cat
  16. Telephoned – Hold Me (7″ Mix)
  17. Punches – Feeling Right (Justin Faust Remix)
  18. Hipstamatic – True
  19. Myomi – Sun In My Eyes (MJ Cole Remix)
  20. School of Seven Bells – Half Asleep (Lusine Remix)

In the interest of full disclosure: This was recorded in one take with Serato, but I made two tiny edits after the fact. Nothing major, just changing the levels on one track and taking out the song I originally started with.
