So WBER/Elektrobank Radio/Alex Ng was nice enough to have me into the studio last weekend for an hour and he was even nice enough to record the set.

This mix was all live, one-take, and on some really weird disco trip. But here it is – it’s an hour long, rough edges and all. Enjoy.

Edit: the occasional popping is most likely due to a dirty needle, sorry about that.

So he’s got a new album. I don’t care. I’m still bumping this “Dat Tree” remix by The Twinsmatic.

I don’t really know who they are, but I do know they’ve got some solid production chops.

One of the best new cuts off of the Kanye album is “Devil In A Red Dress.” I don’t think I’ll ever get the chance to play it out, but man it’s got soul to it.

Skrillex, an LA producer, makes some nice sounds. His production could not be more smooth. Here is his Wikipedia, here is his MySpace.

Ah, disco. At some point I became obsessed, probably shortly after hearing the Artful Dodger remix of “U Got Me,” or maybe after VDRK’s mixtape with the Agent Stereo track “Keep On Groovin’”. Either way, it’s my lifeblood, especially when I’m opening for other DJs.

Ever notice how sometimes you’ll walk into a club at like 10pm and some dude is playing the heaviest bassiest music you’ve ever heard? And you go “Whoa, bartender – make it a quadruple”? Yeah. That’s the thing about disco – it’s hard to be mad at disco when you walk into a club – it’s upbeat, feel-good, and doesn’t feel like it’s too early (unless you’re playing the newest Duck Sauce single, but why the hell would you do that at 10pm?).

I guess my real problem is opening DJs who don’t know how to open. It’s one of those things I picked up on pretty early – a night needs to be paced out: start slow/soulful/easy, and as the drunk level increases the songs can get raunchier and bassier. The exception for that rule will always be Akinyele’s “Put It In Your Mouth,” which is perfectly acceptable to play at any time of the night. How could you be mad at those guitar samples?

Being a good opening DJ requires restraint – you have to dig for tracks that get people primed for whoever is headlining, but you can’t play the songs you know everyone will die for. Why? Because the headliner gets to play the popular songs, not you. It’s just the way these things work.

Think of a night out as a story – no one wants Snape to kill Dumbledore on page 30. Hope I didn’t just ruin that for you.

Classic soul song. Finally got around to grabbing the whole record, but this track could hold me over for decades. So smooth, perfect for a late night or an early morning.

So excited to bring Maggie Horn and Sammy Bananas to Rochester. Their project, Telephoned, is a totally weird remix/cover/mashup project and I’m so into it. 1800Telephoned.com
