My Story:
Born just outside of Boston, I moved to Tucson for eight years and finally moved back to Boston for high school. Four years later, it was time to head to college, so I packed my things and headed to Rochester, NY.
In Rochester, I started DJing hip-hop/top 40 at frat parties using Ableton Live, doing a few formal events on the side and squeezing in other gigs as often as possible. When I was back in Boston, I played sports bars and some upscale retail stores, including Adidas Heritage store in Harvard Square.
Spring of Sophomore year, I started to play out at a few of the house clubs in Rochester, like the newly renovated ONE Ryan Alley. I had the chance to open for Eve6 (yes, that band with the lyrics about having a heart in a blender) at University of Rochester’s massive spring-fling D-Day. I had a spot at the Rochester’s biggest “underground” art festival, Art Awake.
Fall of 2009 I joined up with Rest In Peace Rochester for their Sockhop parties at the Dubland Underground. The concept was simple: 20 local DJs all promoting a show would bring enough people in for a really great party, and would make enough money to pay for some really great out-of-towners like Gina Turner, Alexander Technique, RekLES, Finger on the Pulse, and DJ Craze (who used my needles). I put in the hours, promoted like crazy, and understood that an 8pm timeslot wasn’t the place to play peak-hour tracks. I started to work my way up, which culminated in a headlining slot and a helluva going-away party.
A going away party? Oh yeah, almost forgot: now I’m spending a semester in Cape Town, South Africa where I’m trying to break into the club scene. I’ve finally found “my” sound – a mix of smooth disco/filter house and some really heavy baselines. Whenever I get a chance, though, I love to play some hip-hop/soul/funk, and even some down-tempo lounge. That’s the thing – if you focus too heavily on one sound, you miss out on everything else.
Don’t take my word for it, though, check out my mixtapes (disco house and club bangers), and drop me a line.
The Set-Up:
Macbook Pro, Ableton Live 7, a custom M-Audio UC-33e, my trusty Presonus Firebox, an unbreakable pair of Sennheiser HD-25s, and a pair of Mackie 350s. I’m now also working with a pair of Technics 1200 MKIIs, a Vestax PMC-05 II, and Serato Scratch Live.
