I’ve been down in DC for a few months now and doing bookings around the city. This is a promo mix I made for the frat-star/bottle service clubs, hope you find a use for it. And a little pro-tip for all the DJs out there: don’t play the Chris Brown verse on “Look At Me Now.” 1) He hits women. 2) It’s not particularly good, especially given how it stacks up to Busta’s. Now THAT is a verse.

So I graduated from University of Rochester a couple of weeks ago and hauled myself down to Washington, DC. I’m here for the forseeable future doing public sector/non-profit work. Pictures to follow throughout the summer.

In the meantime, I made a mixtape for some of the clubs down here. This one is all disco, including a re-edit I did of a certain 90′s UK girl group. It’s summery and fresh and you should download it. It was recorded all in one take using Serato/1200s. There are only two edits to this mix – one to fix a control-vinyl issue and another to adjust a drop around the 25min mark.

Soundcloud:

I’m incredibly proud to announce the second installment of my mix series Driving North. For those of you who are new to this series, the idea is pretty simple: I take the last song of my last mix, and use it as the first song in my new mix. It’s a pretty simple constraint, but it helps give direction and makes for an easy gimmick. If you haven’t heard it already, take a listen to my first installment of Driving North. As always, please feel free to tweet/post/blog about this mix. You can find me on Twitter or Facebook.

About Part 2: This is a dark and moody collection of house, garage, and dubstep. Though I have a really hard time with “brostep” (dubstep that sounds like a chainsaw), there are elements of the genre that are really just incredible. The moodier part of dubstep tends to have heavy R&B influences, something I’ve always appreciated. If you’re looking for more of this sound, I highly recommend you check out extrawater radio by my friend Joe Lzrz.

This is a pretty good mix of new and old, all tied together by more or less one constant: I’ve never been able to play them out. That’s not entirely true, I’m sure I’ve managed to squeeze a couple of these into a set somewhere, but these aren’t typical going-out songs so it’s been nice to finally give them a home.

Download: Ezra Mechaber – Driving North, Part Two (save target as)

Tracklist:

  1. School of Seven Bells – Half Asleep (Lusine remix)
  2. Florence & The Machine – You Got The Love (XX remix)
  3. Paul Kalkbrenner – Sky & Sand
  4. CWB feat. Tash Baxter – Into The Twilight
  5. Katy B feat. Ms. Dynamite – Lights On
  6. French Fries & Chaos In The CBD – With You
  7. Joy Orbison – The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow
  8. The Count & Sinden – You Make Me Feel So Good
  9. Joy Orbison – J. Doe
  10. Addison Grove – Footcrab
  11. Disclosure – Linstigator
  12. Throwing Snow – Un Vingt
  13. XI – Light
  14. Gold Panda – Snow & Taxis (Throwing Snow remix)
  15. Skream feat. Freckles – Give You Everything
  16. Todd Edwards – I Might Be (MJ Cole remix)
  17. Maddslinky – Special (MJ Cole’s “Back To The Future” remix)
  18. Broken Social Scene – All To All (Skeet Skeet remix)
  19. Drake – Fireworks (Deadboy Slo Mo House Edit)

Production note: this was recorded in 3 pieces and then cleaned up a little (2 volume edits, tweaking a loop, and smoothing out a recording glitch). The original sounds good, but this is a little shinier.

I’m so proud to finally release my next mixtape, entitled “Driving North: Part I.” It’s a selection of some of my favorite disco records of (mostly) 2010 and moves in a darker direction towards the end.

Why the darker direction? Because it’s winter. Also, because this is going to be a mix series and part 2 will be a darker selection of juke/dub/stuff. So that’s why. And yeah, I’m well aware the middle of this mix is practically a Treasure Fingers’ Greatest Hits mix. Oops. Check the tracklist below, and twitter or facebook me if you’re feeling it! Oh, and check out my past mixtapes.

Download: Ezra Mechaber – Driving North Part I (save target as)

Tracklist:

  1. Miami Horror – Holidays
  2. Flight Facilities feat. Giselle – Crave You (Cassian Remix)
  3. Michael Gray – Borderline
  4. U-Tern – 808 Remix
  5. Marina & The Diamonds – Shampain (Fred Falke Remix)
  6. Sky Ferreira – Stand Back (Stevie Nicks Cover)
  7. Aniki – Lesbian Bondage Fiasco (Nightriders Remix)
  8. Treasure Fingers – Lift Me
  9. Rogerseventytwo – Take Me Higher
  10. Burns & Fred Falke – You Stopped Loving Me (Treasure Fingers Remix)
  11. Pharrell/Uffie – ADD SUV (Armand Van Helden Remix)
  12. Treasure Fingers – What Am I Supposed To Do?
  13. Senor Stereo – Hot Damn!
  14. Senor Stereo – Hot Damn! (Gigamesh Remix)
  15. Tensnake – Coma Cat
  16. Telephoned – Hold Me (7″ Mix)
  17. Punches – Feeling Right (Justin Faust Remix)
  18. Hipstamatic – True
  19. Myomi – Sun In My Eyes (MJ Cole Remix)
  20. School of Seven Bells – Half Asleep (Lusine Remix)

In the interest of full disclosure: This was recorded in one take with Serato, but I made two tiny edits after the fact. Nothing major, just changing the levels on one track and taking out the song I originally started with.

So WBER/Elektrobank Radio/Alex Ng was nice enough to have me into the studio last weekend for an hour and he was even nice enough to record the set.

This mix was all live, one-take, and on some really weird disco trip. But here it is – it’s an hour long, rough edges and all. Enjoy.

Edit: the occasional popping is most likely due to a dirty needle, sorry about that.

Just in time for what is shaping up to be a beautiful weekend in Boston, here’s a new disco tape. It’s another promo mix, no editing except for a track that wound up running a little hot.

Usually my disco has a tad more bass to it, but I was feeling funky and spacey. I really like the plinky, afternoon-y, sound it starts with and the bigger-room sound it ends with. That Russ Chimes remix is probably my favorite track of the whole mix, but how can you say no to Treasure Fingers? And that incredible remix of Dragonette? Defintiely a mix to enjoy while there is sun to be found.

I finished this mix one up a few months ago, but I wanted to make sure I was happy with it. Yes, it’s 128kbps. When you pay as much per mb as I do for internet, maybe you’ll understand. It’s a pretty laidback feel – some jazzy stuff, some disco-y stuff, but all things that you can “lounge” to. I wanted to include some hip-hop, but honestly it just wasn’t sitting right. I’ll be recording part 2 at some point, though, and expect some Guru Jazzmatazz tracks in there (RIP).

I made this tape because 1) I’ve always wanted to make a lounge/downtempo tape, and 2) There’s a particular bar that always evokes this kind of feeling in me and the endless beaches only add to the fire.

So in Cape Town (as well as most of the world), minibus taxis are the way people get around. For the uninitiated, the minibusses must seem like a terrifying proposition – you cram into a tiny bus with 20 other people, or so. Just you, passengers who invariably have too many bags, the fare collector, and the crazy driver. Parts of the van are invariably broken, just hope it isn’t the window. Seatbelts? Forget it. AC? You wish. Pounding kwaito music and death-defying speeds? Oh yes. If you’re really lucky, you’ll get to catch a talk about politics in english, so you can even pick up a little bit of local culture.

But anyway. Apparently the really colorfully decorated cabs with the really loud subwoofers are connected to sound systems. “No kidding,” you might say, “That’s how you play music.” No, no, my friend. I mean a sound system, with DJs and whatnot. Oh yes. And they have the craziest music – heavy bass, spacey drums, blaring synths, and amazing zulu hooks. Apparently they organize drag races/raves every once in a while.

While I don’t have the stones to track down a taxibus rave, I do have the stones to try and swap music with the drivers. The plan: make mixtapes, hand them to the driver, and convince them to hand me over their cd. The mix I put together is all heavy bass, some club rhythms, etc. Stuff that is similar to their cds in idea but totally different in execution. In other words, some hectic driving music. And now I present to you…
